Rowing Types and Boat Classes
There are two TYPES of rowing; “SWEEP” and “SCULLING”.
There are a few BOAT CLASSES in each TYPE of rowing.
The BOAT CLASS is determined by the number of seats in the boat.
SWEEP
One Oar Each
In sweep rowing, each rower uses only one oar. Sweep boats can have two, four, or eight rowers.
SCULLING
Two Oars Each
In sculling, the rower uses two oars. Boats can have one, two, four & sometimes eight rowers.

PAIR (2 + or -)
Two rowers with one oar each, with or without coxswain
FOUR (4 + or -)
Four rowers with one oar each with or without coxswain
EIGHT (8+)
Eight rowers with one oar each with coxswain
SCULLING – Boat Classes
SINGLE SCULL "SINGLE" (1X)
One rower, no coxswain
DOUBLE SCULL "DOUBLE" (2X + or -)
Two rowers with two oars, with or without coxswain
QUADRUPLE SCULL "QUAD" (4X + or -)
Four rowers with two oars each, with or without coxswain
OCTASCULL / OCTUPLE "OCTA" (8X+)
Eight rowers with two oars each, with coxswain
